‘A couple of times I had to check myself because of the fun I was having’:
Home and Away’s Cariba Heine reveals she enjoys playing Summer Bay’s newest villain
Home and Away star, Cariba Heine recently made her dramatic debut as Summer Bay’s newest bad girl ‘Ebony.’ Now, the South African-born Australian actress has revealed she enjoys playing the villain. Speaking to The Daily Telegraph on Tuesday the 29-year-old revealed: ‘I had the best time playing Ebony. I had some really great lines to say and I loved the idea of how much pleasure she gets from causing other people pain. A couple of times I had to check myself because of the fun I was having.’ However the Aussie TV soap star claims Ebony is the antithesis of her personality.‘It’s the complete opposite of myself, which is refreshing,’ the sultry brunette told The Daily Telegraph. But it’s not the first time she has auditioned. Heine said she had submitted audition tapes for a couple of roles but nothing had “excited” her like Ebony. ‘The more I read the scripts, the more her backstory unravelled.’ she said.
Prior to her new role, the South African-born actress rose to fame playing Rikki Chadwick on H2O: Just Add Water, a Channel 10 fantasy program. Her character on the show, which ran from 2006-2010, was a mermaid with special powers who was initially ‘aloof and rebellious.’ She appeared in all three seasons of the show, in addition to its spin-off series Mako: Island Of Secrets. She also scored the lead role of Bridget Sanchez in another teenage series, Blue Water High, for its third and final season which began filming in 2007. The show followed the lives of a young group of students at Solar Blue, a high-performance surf academy, and aired on ABC1 and Nickelodeon.
Cariba was born in Johannesburg and moved to Australia with her parents and older brother when she was three years old. She studied acting and dancing at the National Capital Acting School in Canberra, training in jazz, tap and classical ballet in addition to drama. She received strong reviews playing veteran Australian entertainer Delvene Delaney in the 2012 mini-series Howzat! Kerry Packer’s War on Channel Nine.

Cariba Heine on joining Home And Away: “I got an offer via email!”
The former H2O star is ready to shake up Summer Bay.
Home and Away newcomer Cariba Heine rolled into Summer Bay last week and her character, Ebony has a sinister agenda. She’s sister of big, bad Boyd (Steve Le Marquand) and she is out for revenge following his shocking demise. The vengeful woman hopes to befriend policeman Colby (Tim Franklin), who shot her brother. At the same time, friends will become foes as Ebony spins a web of lies. But how far will she go for revenge? Ahead of Ebony’s debut we chat to the former H2O and Dance Academy star about what we can expect from her crazed character.
Welcome to Home And Away. How did the role come about?
I auditioned via tape from overseas. A few weeks later, I was at the Toronto Film Festival and got an offer via email!
Tell us about Ebony.
She’s a real piece of work. She doesn’t think twice about taking a wrecking ball to someone’s life if they’re in her way. I wouldn’t want to know her.
Does playing the villain scare or excite you?
I’m so excited – it’s a lot of fun. She’s pretty despicable, so I hope she gets a rise out of people!
So, what else can we expect from Ebony? Cariba’s co-star, Tim Franklin, says Ebony is a woman on a mission.
“Ebony is after anyone and everyone who had anything to do with Boyd’s death,” Tim, 27, tells TV WEEK.
And he says she’ll stop at nothing to get what she wants! In an intense week in Home And Away, Ebony even pierces the tyres of her own car to get cop Colby’s attention. “She’s pretty specific about who she wants to take down,” he says. “Revenge is her game, and she won’t stop until she wins.” Uh-oh! Watch out, Summer Bay!

Episodes to air after the break will also introduce us to another new character involved in the kidnapping—Ebony, played by Cariba Heine. In a dramatic promo which aired in some regions after the finale, Ebony is seen with a wealth of photos and information on Justin, Brody, Ava, Tori, Willow, Colby and Dean, commenting that she will “make every one of them pay”, with Hazel also stating that they should burn them to the ground. As the search for Ava intensifies with news coverage and police searches, Ebony is seen seemingly concocting a series of elaborate plans to reel in those on her list. Whilst we don’t know much about the Bay’s newest villain, her connection with the Easton family means she’s likely looking for revenge after the way Justin treated Boyd – and that can’t end well.
